A Look at Online Auctions in South Africa

Online auctions have transformed how South Africans buy and sell goods, providing convenience, transparency, and access to a global marketplace. That’s the word from Graham van Niekerk of Park Village Auctions, who says that understanding the mechanics of online auctions is key to navigating this thriving space, whether buying property, vehicles, or capital equipment.

“Online auctions in South Africa mirror the principles of traditional auctions but occur digitally.” van Niekerk explains. He continues, “The participant registers on the auctioneer’s platform—in our case, on our website—and after creating an account, submit FICA-compliant documents to verify their identity.”

Bidders can browse catalogues of upcoming auctions with images and detailed descriptions of the lots.

Timed online auctions will display starting prices and allow participants to place bids over several days. This is beneficial on big-ticket items where a bidder may need to confer with others before choosing to raise their bid. The sale usually culminates with a live online auction for the highest bid.

PVA is well-known for hosting “simulcast” auctions, where online participants compete with onsite bidders in real time.

The final format available is a webcast auction, where all the participants are online while the auctioneer conducts the auction onsite via live stream.

van Niekerk summates the benefits of online auctions as follows:

  • Convenience: bidding can be done from anywhere with an internet connection.
  • Diverse options: any variety of assets, from cars to properties and plant equipment, can be sold via this channel.
  • Transparency: real-time updates allow bidders to track the auction process.

For first-time bidders, van Niekerk advises: “Only bid on reputable auction sites to avoid scams. Avoid overbidding by setting a firm spending limit. Do research; ensure you understand the product, its market value, and any potential defects.”

Upcoming auctions with online bidding available include:
